Who's in charge: Us or the weather?
There are other things in life more notable.
It's too hot, too cold, too windy, too rainy, too humid... . We all talk about the weather. Even though there isn't a single thing we can do about it. (Climate change discussion aside.)
I am guilty. I've let it ruin vacations - Rain when I was banking on sun? It would send me spiraling into grumpiness. And as I see now, ruining everyone else's good time.
Same with traffic. For a long time I was a try-to-beat-the-traffic type. I'd grip the steering wheel, curse at people, complain about each and every person in a car, truck or bus who was driving too fast, too slow, or like an f'in crazy person. And once I got where I was going, I would tell anyone with two ears about my 'nightmare of a commute'.
Then one day, I heard myself, and thought. "Ugh-it's just traffic." I'm no saint. Some days I'm still shocked at how long it takes to get places. But I try not to let it ruin my day.
As for the weather, while I love a day that is 65 and sunny, I also love rain, snow, and clouds, too. And yes, I curse weather when it affects my plans. However, weather doesn't affect plans as much as we let it affect our plans. And life's too short to let it ruin our day when we don't get what we want.
Let's agree to let the weather be, and accept traffic for the slow crawl it is. Because we all have real things we worry about. Things that keep us up at night. Our jobs, our kids, parents, and friends, our country, our health, finishing that half-marathon we signed up for — why would we waste energy on things like traffic and weather.
